How to Repair Your Gutters

Gutters are an important part of your home as they help to prevent water damage. While they're mostly out of sight, it's important to remember that they can become clogged or damaged easily thats why you might need gutter repair done in your home.

Here are three ways to repair and maintain your gutters so that they stay effective in guiding water away from your home.

Check for blockages in the drainage system

Inspect your gutters in the spring and fall, or after a particularly brutal storm. Why? Debris like leaves, twigs, and dirt pile up quickly and block water from draining properly. When that happens, the water has to go somewhere else--usually down the side of your house where it can cause rot in fascia boards or even enter attics, neither of which is ideal.

You can clear a blockage by hand, while wearing a glove. Just remove the blockage and make sure you dispose of it in an eco-friendly manner. A trowel or gutter brush can help with removing excess dirt and sediment.

To protect your gutters from collection leaves, you can install gutter guards made of mesh or stainless steel. These allow water to pass through but block larger items from falling into the gutter.

The wellbeing of your home is crucial, and it all starts with the gutters. Knowing how to do gutter repair and fix them and keep them well-maintained will ensure that rainwater is directed away from your building safely. Otherwise, saturation could damage solid walls and lead to timber decay or infestation.

Ground that is wet and marshy can ruin shallow foundations, so it's crucial to be able to identify issues with guttering and downpipes.

Inspect for Leaks and Broken Sections

If you come across a heavy blockage while cleaning your gutters, check for any broken sections that might be causing leaks. If the damage is widespread, it might be necessary to cut out the section of gutter and replace it. Alternatively, if you have an extra piece of gutter available, cut a small portion to fit over the hole and use gutter tape to secure it in place. For smaller holes or tears, try using gutter-repair tape or sealant.

To reattach a hanging or pulled away gutter, you can use fascia gutter hangers. By doing this, you will also provide support for the gutter.

If water is flowing down the back of your gutter and onto the fascia, you will need to install a gutter apron or repair the flashing. This will redirect water from roof back into the gutters where it belongs.

Inspect the downspouts to make sure they are clear and draining properly.

The gutters direct the water to the downspouts, which guide it away from your home. The downspouts can get clogged as well, so a gutter brush with a pole is the best method to clean them.

Make certain the downspouts release water off a slope that is at an angle away from your property. If water pools or gathers around the base of a structure, it may drain into the foundation or basement and cause significant issues over time.
